Whalehead Club

Currituck Lighthouse

This 1920's hunt club and vacation home of Edward and Louise Knight is said to have been built due to the other hunt clubs forbidding women to use the facilities. This interesting and historic building and grounds is only one of the interesting stops on the tour.

Currituck Beach Lighthouse

The Currituck Beach Lighthouse was built in 1875 to fill in the dark spot between Cape Henry Virginia and Bodie Island. You can currently climb the 214 steps to reach the spectacular view from the top of the lighthouse. The pictures are stunning of this unpainted red brick lighthouse.

Lighthouse Keepers' House

This duplex was used by 2 keepers and their families until around 1939 when the lighthouse became automated. Althought we cannot enter the actualy keepers' house the dwelling north of this home is open now as a museum. It is said that this house was built sometime during the 1920's to cater to a 3rd lighthouse keeper.

Unknown Shipwreck

Shipwreck Corolla

The shipwreck shown in the image to the right became visible during the nor'easterns in December of 2009. The central beam was over 50 foot making it one of the larger shipwrecks on the Outer Banks. This shipwreck just became visible and with less than a foot of sand build up it will be covered again.
